Life throws curveballs. Sometimes, they’re gentle lobs, easy to handle. Other times, they’re fast-paced smashes that leave you reeling. Prior to September 2021, Nikki Monzeglio never would’ve dreamed of playing pickleball for cancer recovery.
The sport hadn’t reached South African shores yet and she was fit, loving life and doing it right. Suddenly, a late-stage cancer diagnosis up ended the 58-year-old’s life. This is her story.
Facing the Challenge: A Determined Spirit
Nikki’s life before cancer was a vibrant tapestry woven with work, family, and an active social life. She thrived on the energy of running a business with a close friend and cherished the moments spent with her two daughters.
Suddenly, the news of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a specific type of cancer, shattered that normalcy. Fear replaced her usual optimism, and the weight of shielding her daughters from worry became a heavy burden.
Determined to fight, Nikki embarked on an eight-month course of Red Devil chemotherapy. While the hair loss was a visible reminder of the battle within, it was the neuropathy, a nerve damage causing numbness and weakness, that truly impacted her. Simple tasks like holding a cup or plate became monumental feats. The once-confident woman who enjoyed an active life now struggled with clumsiness and a loss of coordination. This new reality gnawed at her spirit, leaving her feeling frustrated and isolated.
A Friend’s Suggestion: A Spark of Hope
Witnessing Nikki’s struggle, a close friend named it what it was: despair. But this friend wasn’t one to simply observe. Recognizing Nikki’s need for activity and social interaction, they suggested something unexpected – pickleball.
Intrigued, yet apprehensive, Nikki considered the idea. Pickleball, a relatively unknown and new sport in South Africa, seemed less physically demanding than tennis. However, the initial nervousness about her limitations – the neuropathy, the fear of falling, the feeling of being out of place – was considerable.
Playing Pickleball for Cancer Recovery
Taking a deep breath, Nikki decided to step onto the court at Fairland’s Pickleball Club (now known as New Northcliff Pickleball Club). What greeted her wasn’t the cold, sterile environment she might have expected from a new activity. Instead, she was met with warmth and genuine enthusiasm. The players, a diverse group united by their love for the game, welcomed her with open arms.
A Warm Pickleball Community
The camaraderie at the club was immediate. No one treated her differently because of her condition. Instead, they focused on the joy of the game and encouraged her participation. This sense of belonging, combined with the gentle physical activity, became a powerful turning point for Nikki.
With each game, Nikki noticed a difference. Her strength and confidence began to return, mirroring the gradual improvement in her hand and foot feeling. Pickleball wasn’t solely a distraction, it was actively aiding her recovery process. The act of hitting the ball, strategizing with her teammates, and the laughter shared on the court were all contributing to her well-being.
Beyond Recovery: A Passion Ignited
Nikki’s experience on the pickleball court went beyond personal healing. The sport had become more than just a game, it was a community, a source of strength, and a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome challenges. Fueled by this newfound passion, Nikki felt compelled to share the transformative power of pickleball with others.
Becoming an Advocate: Spreading the Joy
Nikki took an active role in promoting pickleball. She introduced friends and family to the sport, reveling in their transformed smiles as they discovered the fun and camaraderie. She even joined forces with others to establish a new court with proper facilities, ensuring a safe and accessible space for players of all abilities.
A Beacon of Hope: Inspiring Others
Nikki Monzeglio’s story is so more than just a feel-good anecdote. It’s a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, there’s always the potential for recovery, joy, and community. Pickleball, in her case, was the catalyst. It provided a path to physical recovery, fostered a sense of belonging, and ignited a passion for sharing that with others.
The Power of Pickleball: Beyond the Court
Nikki’s story speaks volumes about the impact of pickleball. It’s a sport that transcends age, physical limitations, and even illness. It fosters social connections, promotes physical activity, and provides a much-needed mental boost. It’s a microcosm of community, where encouragement and support are the cornerstones.
As Nikki herself says, pickleball isn’t just a game, it’s become a lifeline. It’s a reminder that even when life throws its toughest curveballs, there’s always a chance to step onto the court, swing your paddle, and find the strength to win.
