Meet Blake McMurray, a resilient North Carolinian whose life took a remarkable turn thanks to pickleball. Battling chronic injuries from tennis and struggling with weight, Blake found new hope and health through this dynamic paddle sport.
Before Pickleball: Overcoming Physical Challenges
Relationship with Exercise and Weight Management
Before discovering pickleball, Blake’s exercise routine was sporadic, mainly limited to tennis sessions amidst a largely sedentary lifestyle. Weight management was a constant struggle, impacting daily activities and causing chronic pain. “I accepted the exhaustion and pain as normal,” Blake reflects. “I’d always lag behind during family outings and needed frequent breaks just to manage.”
Motivation for Change
Blake’s turning point came after a meniscus tear from tennis, leaving her searching for a joint-friendly alternative that could support her weight loss journey without aggravating existing injuries.
Discovering Pickleball: A New Lease on Fitness
Introduction to Pickleball
Introduced to pickleball by a friend, Blake was initially skeptical but quickly fell in love with the sport’s unique blend of strategy, athleticism, and camaraderie. “It was like finding a new lease on life,” Blake recalls. “Pickleball not only eased my physical pain, it revitalized my spirit.”
Initial Challenges
Self-taught initially, Blake faced the challenge of relearning proper technique and overcoming physical limitations. “I had to break old habits and build new ones,” she admits. “But the joy and fun of pickleball kept me motivated.”
Weight Loss & Transformation
Journey to Health and Fitness
Driven by a desire to excel in pickleball and reclaim her health, Blake embarked on a transformative journey. Through a combination of regular pickleball sessions and dietary changes, Blake shed an impressive 70 pounds in just six months. “Pickleball became my motivation to stay active and eat healthier,” Blake explains. “It wasn’t solely about losing weight, it was about gaining a completely new perspective in terms of my daily habits.”
Impact on Overall Health
Beyond weight loss, pickleball catalyzed improvements in flexibility, endurance, and mental resilience. “I went from needing daily naps to having boundless energy,” Blake shares. “Besides the immense physical changes, pickleball transformed my entire outlook on life.”
Lifestyle & Community Integration
Embracing the Pickleball Lifestyle
Today, Blake’s routine revolves around pickleball, playing and drilling five to six days a week alongside strength training. “Pickleball isn’t just a sport for me, it’s a lifestyle,” Blake emphasizes. “It’s where I find community, friendship, and personal growth.”
Role of the Pickleball Community
The supportive pickleball community, particularly her coach and doubles partner Billy McKinney, played a crucial role in Blake’s journey from novice to Senior Pro competitor. “Billy’s belief in me pushed me to surpass my own expectations,” Blake acknowledges. “He’s not only a coach, he’s a friend and mentor.”
Facing Challenges & Setting Goals
Overcoming Setbacks
Despite setbacks like injuries, Blake’s determination to excel in pickleball remains steadfast, reinforcing her commitment to continuous improvement. “Every setback is a chance to learn and grow stronger,” Blake affirms. “Pickleball has taught me resilience and perseverance.”

Fabulous!!! I broke my shoulder on the court 4 years ago. It took me hypnosis and a 3 year break to return. The past year I’ve be been playing increasingly more frequently and I have improved so much in just the last 4 months from classes and open play and list 15-20 lbs. I am inspired by my fellow players and the wonderful community. In fact, this month, I was the second Pickleball club member to be highlighted in our newsletter. It’s not just because of my comeback, but because I also created a group for women starting out to play who are not as confident of themselves in the game. My own return was very difficult and frightening for me. And I am so thrilled to have persevered. I certainly wasn’t interviewed because I’m a great player! I just believe in playing with Grace and inclusion.
